Abstract:

This study aims to assess whether the GSTS program has achieved its desired target and whether it is already addressing current gender issues in the maritime sector. It is a descriptive research which used the triangulation method (survey questionnaire, HGDG checklist, class observation). 244 respondents were sampled for the study. Data gathering was conducted within the NMP training complex, house visits to five nearby barangays in Tacloban City and via e-mail addresses and Facebook accounts of the target respondents. Processing of data was done at the Maritime Research Section (MRS) of the NMP using MS Word and MS Excel tools. Percentage distribution and frequency counts were utilized in the presentation of data in either graphical or tabular form.

Findings of the study showed that there is a very small difference in the level of awareness on gender issues between the Experimental Group and the Control Group. There is, however, a higher level of awareness on GAD laws/policies in the Experimental Group than in the Control Group. The former also showed a high level of favorable and positive reaction towards the conduct of the GSTS Course. Results also showed that the Experimental Group were able to acquire knowledge on GAD concepts and were able to apply this knowledge in their jobs as seafarers. In addition, it was found out that gender issues and GAD laws/policies in the course syllabus are not yet aligned with maritime setting. Furthermore, the NMP management still has to make additional efforts when it comes to monitoring and evaluating the training program.
