Abstract:
This study looked into how female trainees of the National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP) perceive the seafaring profession, which for centuries has been exclusively controlled by men. By gaining insight on what inspired these women to become seafarers; the problems/challenges they have encountered or may encounter on board; how long they are willing to be employed in shipboard jobs; the reasons why they may quit; and what other maritime-related occupations they may be interested in, the Agency as well as the maritime industry will be able to identify policies and programs to be developed to further encourage women to join the maritime work force, enhance the abilities of female seafarers and maximize their full potential. This will ultimately lead to the increase in the participation of women in the maritime profession.
